Unfortunately, you still can't have a CPU-controlled character fight alongside you throughout the single-player adventure. These hired heavies serve a similar function, but inflict greater damage in their seconds of screen time. In the first game, you could convince enemies to join you as assist characters if you spared them from being knocked unconscious this time around, you can do that plus hire select goons. It also expands the enemy recruitment system, which lets a foe briefly join you in the fight. River City Girls 2 has fighting game-like elements, such as parries, launchers, and wall splats, that give you more combo options. The brawls are just as exciting as they were in the previous game, if not more so. You don't need to know character relationships and histories to enjoy the encounters River City Girls 2 quickly tosses you into brawls. Thankfully, WayForward populates the environments with new enemy characters, as well as familiar faces from the last game, the classic Kunio-Kun/River City titles, and the Double Dragon universe. The map makes the backtracking even more annoying, because you must open it using the in-game smartphone to see where to go (the game desperately needs an on-screen mini-map). This isn't optional, and comes across as unnecessary padding. For example, Williams (a classic Double Dragon enemy) tasks you with returning power to certain parts of the city, which requires you to revisit a few areas.
